Strong demand from restockers drives cow and calf prices to a record $1880 a unit - ABC

Records tumbled at the Roma saleyards, where strong demand saw a record price of $1,880 paid for a cow and calf unit.

Martin Bunyard from the National Livestock Reporting Service said reduced supply, combined with recent rain in some areas, has seen strong demand from restockers.

"As a consequence, we had a record price reached today for the cows and calves," Mr Bunyard said.

"That was $1,880 a unit; they were younger cows though.

"We normally don't get such young cows here, but they were Angus-cross with very good calves at foot and they attracted a lot of attention from the restockers."

The cattle were bought by local producers in the Injune area who have recently received good rain.

Mr Bunyard said cattle were in short supply due to a big sell-off over the past couple of years, which could be attributed to drought and good prices.

"At the moment, the expectation is that these sort of prices for cow and calf types are expected to continue, at least in the near future," he said.
